Hercules Brabazon Brabazon 1821-1906, was an English watercolour painter. He was born Hercules Brabazon Sharpe his father was Hercules Sharpe and his father in-law was Sir Anthony Brabazon and upon his death he declared the young painter had to adopt the name Brabazon to be able to inherit his estate, hence the name Brabazon Brabazon. The young artist was destined to become a lawyer as his father was, but he insisted on travelling to Rome to study art and music at the Academia di Santa Cecilia and the Academia di San Luca, upon his inheriting the estate in Ireland he became independent financially and he travelled widely and extensively, throughout the Mediterranean. There is a 1912 biography of the artist which promotes the most accurate version of his life. This picture was painted around the later part of the 19th Century when Brabazon was travelling and painting in the North African states, Tunisia , Algeria, Morocco , Brabazon died in 1906, the location of the picture remains a mystery and the general consensus of opinion is the location is in one of the North African states. If we manage to identify the area we will amend the biography.
