Professor Nevill Coghill

Albert Rutherston 1881-1953, was an English artist, who painted portraits, landscapes, illustrated books and designed stage sets. Two of his brothers were Sir William Rothenstein and Charles Rutherston, William was also an accomplished artist and principal of the Royal College of Art, Charles was a collector of art. This pencil portrait of Professor Nevill Coghill was drawn in 1945 probably at Oxford where he held a position of Fellow, he also was an associate of J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis. Coghill co-wrote a Broadway and West End musical success Canterbury Tales receiving 4 Tony nominations. He was also Director of the Oxford University Dramatic Society.
