Copy of a Portrait of Pierre Seriziat by Jacques Louis David which was painted in 1795 , David 1748-1825, this picture is a direct copy by an artist by the name of F. Hamilton. There is no known literature of the current painter of this picture, however the subject is well known and this image has been widely copied, it is certainly oil on canvas with a possibility of canvas printed influence underneath. The artist, Hamilton, has clearly painted the general structure of the canvas with an accomplished dexterity and professionalism. The sitter Pierre Seriziat was the brother in law of Jacques Louis David, and he sat for this picture around the same time as his wife sat for her portrait. The painter David was the most successful painter of the late 18th and early 19th Century, his biography is well covered on the internet and it would be an injustice to this great artist to attempt to promote his history of artwork here, however he was a favorite of the French King until the uprising in the Revolution when David was subjected to the familiar treatment for being in association with the French Court, he survived the times sufficiently well to exile himself to the Netherlands where he remained until his death. I believe the frame to be modern, 20th Century, of Spanish and Baroque influence which is unusual for a French picture, but clearly this is a frame of importance for such a work and actually displays the picture in a fashionable manner as Seriziat the sitter who presents himself as a wealthy and somewhat cavalier individual.
