Joanna Bauer-Stumpff 1873-1964, known as Jo was a Dutch painter and art teacher, she was also a Founding member of the ' Amsterdamse Joffers' which was the equivalent of the female Dutch association of artists of Amsterdam. She was a talented musician but she decided to teach art, she studied at the Art Academy in Amsterdam until 1900.
In 1902 she married Marius Bauer, a very popular painter whose works were much sort after, and still are today, and consequently Jo quit painting to assist her husband with his very successful painting career. They travelled extensively throughout Europe and the Far East. It wasn't until the death of Marius Bauer that she took up drawing again in 1932. As the years past her palette became lighter and her subjects more varied.
This painting is signed and a very rare and early work of Joanna Bauer as there are very few of her works known to exist and fewer preserved, the view could be Haarlem or Amsterdam. There is an image to the reverse of this picture which has been over painted of a standing figure, it is in the style of Marius Bauer and we think probably by him, however we believe the canvas has been turned over and Joanna has re-used the canvas to paint this picture.
She lived to the great age of 91, and continued to draw and re-invent her style of works until she ran out of energy.
