George Hornemann, is an unknown painter of either Swiss, Austrian or German extraction. Our curators have so far been unable to trace this artist where we are wondering if the name appears to be a pseudonym, clearly an accomplished artist in architectural depictions, the painter has inscribed it PINXIT 1909 which displays that he definitely painted this work, whoever he was. Hornemann is a rare enough name in the history of art and yet as good an artist as he is he has remained anonymous, so far. The work is of Interlaken in Switzerland and it is in the Canton of Bern, considered the gateway to the Swiss Alps. Interlaken has a reputation as a tourist resort, it is within easy reach of the Eiger and the Jungfrau both famous Swiss mountain peaks. As a tourist destination it became popular from about 1800 AD and was known for the clean air and spa, with the advancement in transport the railways enhanced the development of up market hotels and guest houses with views of the Jungfrau as shown in this painting. This is a large picture in it's original frame, the frame which is very typical of Continental Framers with the corner braces which is also a regular feature of European works.
