Sue Read (b. 1941) is an English watercolourist known for her contemplative, small-scale still-life paintings. A member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours (RI), her delicate work features everyday objects like porcelain, eggs, and glass. Early life and education Born: Susan Melia was born in 1941 in Slough, Buckinghamshire. Education: She attended Aylesbury Grammar School before studying art at: High Wycombe School of Art (1959–1963) The Royal West of England Academy (1963–1964) Family: In 1965, she married Robert J. Read and later adopted his surname for her professional work. The couple had three sons. Artistic career and style Professional since 1980: Read has been a professional painter since 1980, primarily focusing on still-life works. Still-life subjects: Her preferred subjects include: Porcelain bowls and lustreware jugs Eggs, shells, and small fruits Glass and flowers Watercolour technique: She works in transparent watercolours, building up layers of color and tone. Her paintings are typically small and created in natural light. Capturing light: Her technique is focused on representing the light-reflecting qualities of translucent and lustrous objects. Artistic aim: Read has stated that her work is intended to convey "calm and quiet".
