John Lawson 1868-1909, was a Scottish landscape painter who exhibited a number of paintings at the Royal Scottish Academy, recognising his place among the Scottish art scene. Lawson worked in sculpture, glass design and as a illustrator, clearly a multi talented artist who painted this Scottish woodland scene probably during the 1890's. Glasgow Life Museums hold examples of his works. His paintings show his recurring focus on Scottish rural life which display a delicate, atmospheric style very typical of the late Victorian landscape painters of the time. We have enclosed the images of before and after the restoration cleaning which shows the depth of vision Lawson had to create such works. There is a lack of definitive biographical information of Lawson but his works consisted chiefly of oil landscapes that included rural scenes with woodland and cottages. This painting is thought to be unsigned, however we intend to re-photograph this work with a much higher resolution camera as in our later pictures and hopefully find the undiscovered attribution. This picture is consequently catalogued as unsigned however further information will be added in the near future.
