He led the transition from Victorian academicism to \"pure form\" and direct carving. He was born in 1886 in London. He studied at City and Guilds of London Art School. He worked under the sculptor Sir William Reynolds-Stephens. Dobson, as his father, was originally a painter and shifted to sculpture after seeing works of Post-Impressionism. Dobson was a Member of the London Group and Group X. He further promoted direct carving (working straight into stone or wood). He focused on the female nude, simplified into rhythmic, monumental shapes. Within the Tate Gallery a prominent work by Dobson is called Cornucopia (1925–27) and is considered a masterpiece of British modernism. Dobson was the elder statesman who paved the way for Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth. In the 1920s, Dobson was the top-tier British sculptor and draughtsman . Dobson helped found the Seven and Five Society, which Moore later joined. By the 1930s, Moore’s radical abstraction began to overshadow Dobson's more classical modernism. Despite becoming rivals for commissions, Moore acknowledged Dobson for \"breaking the ice\" for modern sculpture in Britain. Dobson both served as Official War Artist during WWII; Dobson focused on the Home Front and dockyards. Dobson taught as the Head of Sculpture at the Royal College of Art (1946–1953), this position he obtained with the help of Henry Moore. He was elected a Royal Academician in 1953. Dobson died in London in 1963. Though his fame dipped mid-century, he is now celebrated as the critical link between traditional craft and 20th-century abstraction.
