Dobson was born in London and his father was a commercial artist, bird and flower designs for greeting card companies, this influenced Dobson in the earlier part of his career. Dobson began as a painter but increasingly turned to sculpture and built a reputation for outstanding sculpture in the realist style and firstly through direct carving and moving onto modelling which lead to bronze production but in small numbers. This portrait is from the earlier part of his career and represents his early realistic style and still under the influence of the Victorians, he later moved onto cubist mannerisms and included partial colors into his drawings. Frank Dobson (1886–1963) was a pivotal figure in the development of British Modernism and one of the most significant sculptors of the interwar period. While his reputation was later eclipsed by younger contemporaries like Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth, Dobson was instrumental in introducing avant-garde aesthetics to British sculpture. Born in London, Dobson began his artistic journey as an apprentice to the sculptor Sir William Reynolds-Stephens. He initially focused on painting, studying at the Leyton Technical Institute and later the City and Guilds of London Art School. His early exposure to the works of Post-Impressionists and the influence of Roger Fry’s Omega Workshops shifted his focus toward simplified, rhythmic forms. Following service in the First World War, Dobson transitioned fully to sculpture. He became a founding member of Group X in 1920, an experimental collective led by Wyndham Lewis. During this era, Dobson emerged as the primary British practitioner of \"Direct Carving,\" a method that rejected the traditional academic process of clay modelling for bronze casting in favour of working directly into stone or wood. Dobson’s work is characterised by a harmonious blend of classical tradition and modern abstraction. His key contributions include: Reducing the human figure to essential geometric volumes. Drawing inspiration from Assyrian and Egyptian sculpture, as well as the work of Constantin Brâncuși. Achieving a weight and presence in his figures, most notably in his celebrated Cornucopia (1925–27). In the 1930s, Dobson moved toward more naturalistic, terra-cotta works and portraiture. Despite the rise of pure abstraction, he remained a prestigious figure in the art world, serving as the Professor of Sculpture at the Royal College of Art from 1946 to 1953, a position that Henry Moore helped him to achieve.
